Sarah was the eighth child of John COTTON (1650 – 1714) and Sarah HEARLE (1654 – ), born 1685 in Portsmouth, Province N-H and died 1740 also at Portsmouth. She was also the granddaughter of William COTTON ( – 1678) and Elizabeth HAM ( – ).
Sarah supposedly married Edward CATER, the third child of Richard CATER II, born about 1675 in Bloody Point, N-H Colony and died 1722 also at Portsmouth, about 1708 in the Province of New Hampshire.
According to the Cotton Family of Portsmouth, N. H. by Frank Ethridge Cotton, A.B., (Boston MA: New England Historic Genealogical Society, 1905), p.4, this Sarah was unmarried in 1714. If this is correct, then how can she be Edward’s wife… or, the children of Margaret, Mary, or John I ??
Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.
