CENSUS: 1880 - In Camp Grant District, Humboldt, California - ED 46, Ancestry Image 4 of 10. In the home were Peter Y Carter 48 Maine, Aramita 36 Iowa, P Wm. D 8 CA, J. L. M 7 CA, Sarah P 4 CA, and N. E. W. 2 CA.

So Peter Y = Peter York and Araminta = Arminta Dicus - those were straight forward and agree with what we know.
P Wm D age 8 = My grandmother's fgs showed William Dicus Carter. The P is probably Peter after his father. I haven't been able to locate info on him.
J L M age 7 = My grandmother had him as Lyman Carter. California death index has him as Joshua M Carter. I believe since he was in Humbolt County this is all one person.
Sarah P age 4 = Sarah Priscilla on my grandmother's FGS.
N. E. W. age 2 = Edwin Nicholas on my grandmother's FGS. WWI Draft registration has him as Nicholas Edwin as does the CA Death Index. The 1900 - 1920 census all list him as Nicholas.

J Lyman M Carter and Joshua Morton Carter are one and the same. The J. Lyman M. Carter comes from the census. I am confident that they are one and the same. I am away from my computer but will double check tonight.

This response was posted by Robert E Givens on Monday, September 13, 2010 at 7:54 pm:

Interesting. It seems to me I heard that rumor once too. The why has never been explained to me but my ancestor (Sarah York), the first wife, left with her daughter when they were sent to colonize Arizona and never came back.

I presume Sally Ann was keeping William "busy" and Sarah felt no need to hang around as the "old" wife. I had never thought about this until just recently when I put all the pieces together. Sarah left Utah in 1882 to never return. Just an observation.

I have no clue to the dynamics - to the best of my knowledge nothing was ever written down but Sarah's lack of desire to return to Utah speaks volumes.
